Planning a trip to the Dominican Republic? Start here

The Dominican Republic is a popular Caribbean destination for beaches, city breaks and outdoor adventures. If you’re travelling from North London, our pharmacist-led clinics offer straightforward, destination-specific travel health advice and vaccinations to help you prepare. This page explains the main health risks to be aware of, sensible prevention steps and how to arrange a convenient appointment with North London Travel Clinics in Brent or Neasden.

Why travellers go to the Dominican Republic

People visit the Dominican Republic for sun, coastlines and cultural cities such as Santo Domingo and Santiago. Trips range from short beach holidays to longer stays for volunteering, adventure sports or visits to rural communities. That variety matters for health planning — city breaks usually carry different risks to time spent in rural or jungle areas. Knowing where you’ll go and what you’ll do helps us give the right vaccine and prevention advice.

Key health risks and the vaccines to consider

Routine vaccines: Make sure you are up to date with routine UK immunisations (for example MMR and tetanus). If your last tetanus-containing jab was many years ago and you’ll be in areas with limited medical care, a booster can be useful.

Food and waterborne illnesses: Hepatitis A and typhoid are transmitted by contaminated food or water. Hepatitis A vaccination is commonly advised for most travellers; a typhoid vaccine is considered for those visiting areas with poor sanitation or visiting friends and family.

Mosquito-borne infections: Dengue, chikungunya and Zika circulate in the Dominican Republic. These viruses are spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes. There’s no routine vaccine for dengue for travellers without past infection, and there is no vaccine for Zika — bite avoidance (repellent, clothing, screens) is the main protection. Pregnant women should discuss travel plans with a clinician because Zika can affect pregnancy.

Malaria: Overall malaria risk in the Dominican Republic is low. Major cities such as Santo Domingo and Santiago have no malaria risk, but occasional local outbreaks have occurred in some provinces. Antimalarial tablets are rarely needed for short stays in most tourist areas, though they may be discussed for long stays or specific high-risk itineraries.

Rabies: Rabies has been reported in domestic animals and bats. Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is sensible for people doing long stays, working with animals, or planning activities where medical care is limited. Pre-exposure vaccination shortens post-exposure treatment if an incident occurs.

Other risks: There’s a very low reported risk of schistosomiasis and a variable risk of tuberculosis. Make sure travel health insurance is in place and get tailored advice if you have long-term health conditions, are pregnant, or are travelling with young children.

How to prepare before you travel

Book early: Aim to see us around 4–6 weeks before departure. Some vaccines need more than one dose or take time to become effective — rabies and some hepatitis schedules are examples — but we can still help if you’re leaving sooner.

Tell us about your trip: Bring details of your itinerary, planned activities, any long-term health conditions and current medications. Children and pregnant travellers need specific advice.

Pack smart: Take insect repellent (DEET or picaridin-based), a copy of your vaccination record, oral rehydration sachets and a basic first-aid kit. Use condoms if there’s any risk of sex with new partners while abroad — this also helps reduce Zika sexual transmission.

Consider prescriptions: If you will be in remote areas, we can prescribe antibiotics for travellers’ diarrhoea and discuss antimalarial options if relevant for your route.

Insurance and documentation: Check you have adequate travel health insurance and any entry requirements. Although the Dominican Republic does not have a routine yellow fever risk, some travellers arriving from certain countries may be asked for proof of vaccination — bring documentation if relevant.
